At the 41st Annual SSE Conference, Dr. Julie Beischel presented findings showing that mediums exhibit higher compassion and lower death anxiety compared to non-mediums. She emphasized the need for ecological validity in mediumship research and highlighted the importance of protecting mediums from potentially misleading studies.
At the recent Online Encore of the 41st Annual Conference of the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE) — the focus of which was “Maverick Science” — Center Director of Research, Julie Beischel, PhD, presented “Comparison of Compassion and Death Anxiety in Mediums and Demographically Identical Non-Mediums.”
Dr. Beischel discussed the current state of mediumship accuracy testing and shared that mediums score significantly higher on tests of compassion and lower in fear of death or death anxiety than demographically identical non-mediums. Both groups were roughly 90% white females over 40. These data were collected during the OCTO and SAMS/CINCO Studies. If you participated — Thank you!
Dr. Beischel also took this opportunity to speak about the necessity for ecological validity in mediumship research (that is, how closely an experiment mimics tasks mediums actually do in reality) and researchers’ responsibilities regarding protecting mediums.
Additional data presented showed that mediums scored significantly higher on a measure of the Big Five personality trait of Agreeableness than non-mediums.
Excerpt:
“The prevalence of this trait means mediums may be open to and even eager to help ‘researchers’ and may end up participating in ‘studies’ with low ecological validity. This often allows for public critiques of the resulting data that are based in fear, ignorance, and/or dogma. These types of studies and the resulting critiques can hamper support for and thus progress in this field. Just because a study utilizes participants who identify as mediums, that does not necessarily make it a mediumship study…”
