Are
you interested in receiving a mediumship reading
as a volunteer in a scientific research study?
The Windbridge
Institute is currently seeking volunteers to act as sitters
who will receive and score mediumship readings as part of our
on-going research about life after death and the abilities of
mediums.
We
are not recruiting mediums at this time.
For
more information about research sitters' required qualifications
and potential responsibilities, time commitments, compensation,
and costs and to complete a secure, on-line pre-screening questionnaire,
please visit:
In our New Year Note to friends of Windbridge,
we have included a 2009 Year-in-Review including highlights
of Windbridge news, research, conferences, publications, and
media with links to the original materials. We have also included
a peek into what is in store for Windbridge during 2010.
New
book by Windbridge researcher Adam Rock, PhD: Constructivism and Shamanic Experiences
In
addition to his work at Windbridge studying the phenomenology
(or experiences) of mediums, Adam Rock, PhD, performs research
on a variety of topics at Deakin University in Australia.
Dr. Rock's new book, Constructivism and Shamanic Experiences:
A Psychological Study, describes his research of induced
shamanic journeying in naïve participants.
(Click
on cover image for more info or to order!)
The
book's publisher states: "Shamans are individuals whose
souls purportedly journey to other realms in order to serve
their community. A great deal of controversy surrounds the
issue of whether the content of journeying experiences is
simply an exteriorization of the shamans cultural cosmology
or referentially linked to entities that exist independently
of the shamans mind and body.Constructivism
and Shamanic Experiences: A Psychological Studyis
an empirical exploration of the antecedents, epistemology
and origins of visual mental imagery associated with journeying.
The author describes a series of experiments designed to investigate
whether naive participants (i.e., individuals devoid of a
shamanic cosmological framework) are capable of experiencing
ostensibly shamanic journeying imagery. A modified hypnoanalytic
technique is also presented in an attempt to uncover the origins
of this imagery. This book would be useful to humanistic and
transpersonal psychologists, anthropologists and philosophers
of religion."

Toward a Global Shift: Seeding the Field of Collective Change
June
17-21, 2009
JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa
3800 W. Starr Pass Blvd.
Tucson, AZ 85745
As part
of the conference, on Wednesday, June 17th, Windbridge
Director of Research Dr. Julie Beischel
and IONS Senior Scientist Dr. Dean Radin will be speaking during
an all day Pre-Conference Institute titled "Survival
of Consciousness: A Matter of Life and Death."
"Half
a dozen classes of scientific evidence exist for some form of
survival of consciousness after bodily death; some are more
persuasive than others. We will review this evidence and assess
the current state of the art. One of the most intriguing classes
of survival research focuses on mediums and the information
they report. We will examine recent advances in mediumship research
methods, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate
in a demonstration with certified research mediums. We will
also suggest ways of advancing our understanding of the perennial
question of survival, which is literally a matter of life and
death."

Windbridge receives Research Grant from
the Bial Foundation
Windbridge
was honored to receive notification in November 2008 that our
proposed project titled "Process- and Proof-focused Investigation
of Anomalous Information Reception by Mediums: A Two-Part Quantitative
Study" will be awarded a two-year research grant by the
Bial Foundation.
The Bial
Foundation, associated with a major pharmaceutical company of
the same name in Portugal, began offering a biannual grant competition
in 1994 for research in parapsychology and psychophysiology.
In the past, Bial grants have been awarded to researchers in
22 different countries and at such institutions as Duke, Harvard,
and Princeton Universities, the Rhine Research Center, the Institute
of Noetic Sciences, and the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at
the University of Edinburgh.
Windbridge
Scientific Advisory Board Member and five-time Bial grant-recipient
Dean Radin, PhD, says, "For the 2008 competition, over
200 proposals written by over 600 scientists around the world
were submitted, and about 50 awards were granted. The Windbridge
Institute was fortunate to win one of those awards, demonstrating
that its work is judged by international peers to be important,
and reflecting the Institute's commitment to conducting world-class
science."
We are tremendously
grateful for the encouragement we have received from our members,
advisors, and supporters during 2008 that made applying for
and receiving this research grant possible.

Dr. Julie Beischel, Director of Research at The Windbridge Institute,
chats with Skeptiko's Alex Tsakiris in an informative and fun

Windbridge receives research grant to
study Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)
Earlier
this year, the American
Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena (AA-EVP) invited
Windbridge to submit a research proposal to them regarding the
controlled examination of EVP. The submitted proposal titled
Real-time EVP Conversations: A Pilot Study was accepted
by AA-EVP in May 2008.
This study will use state-of-the-art technologies and methods
to examine reported real-time trans-etheric communication. The
proposed methods maximize experimental controls while ensuring
an optimal environment in which the phenomenon can be documented.
The results of this study will be prepared for publication by
Windbridge and will provide guidance for future studies intended
to determine the feasibility of real-time, two-way trans-etheric
communication.
"We are very excited to be working with AA-EVP on this
project," states Mark Boccuzzi, Director of Operations
at Windbridge. "This study will push the boundaries of
the technologies used to capture and analyze EVP and will hopefully
expand our understanding of this phenomenon."
This and future studies will be supported by the AA-EVP Sarah
Estep Research Fund and additional private donations.
